Disability Embodiment, Speculative Fiction, and the Testbed of Futurity

The article analyses depictions of disability embodiment in a range contemporary North American speculative fiction that depicts post-crisis worlds social and environmental breakdown. It argues each novel bodies are threatened placed under pressure, particularly terms capacity function. While some resolve this through recourse to humanist narratives restitution, others imagine futures which both societies become reformatted. Bodies remain material, but they also metamorphized messy; hold charged manifestations personhood, leak these conceptions “person;” recognizably human, patterned as posthuman. results disability-led that, precisely because formed imagined possibilities the future, offer productive for re-visioning present.
